It begins with the story set in Sri Lanka with the protagonist living a happy childhood (like any well-to-do kid in the Indian sub-continent). A story of a mother, a daughter, a lover/wife and a human being. And this connects every happening in the book with a nice thread and you begin to realise how powerful Nayomi was in creating the protagonist. The narrator, who is also the protagonist, and mentions her name in the last page of the book. I kept looking for the name of the protagonist through the book and realised Nayomi wanted you to vouch for her (and her deeds) till the very end.
Having won accolades for her first book ‘ Island of a Thousand Mirrors’ (which I am yet to read), Nayomi treads upon the subject of childhood trauma so beautifully that you do not realise that the book is getting into that dark territory and the aftermath. What Lies Between Us is Nayomi’s second book. And that too, simple words and simple sentences. There are these authors who can pen down lines so realistically that you would be surprised and make a remark ‘Isn’t that exactly how I felt about this?’, or ‘Why can’t I put these into words like this?’ Nayomi Munaweera belongs to that nice set of writers who are effectively able to portray human emotion via words.
